Writing For Food & Wine — But Not About Food Or Wine

I’ve written a bunch of stuff in the last month or so for the fine humans at Food & Wine which I haven’t bothered to link to here. So, belatedly, I’m bothering. Let’s get down to it, shall we?

First up — it seems like just a few months ago that I was writing about Bowmore and Aston Martin ending their partnership of several years. Just as well, I thought, because an automaker that collaborates with a whisky distillery… well, I for one can’t help but make the drinking-and-driving connection. But Aston Martin’s Formula One division is now in bed with Scotch whisky titan Glenfiddich, and they’ve got the limited edition collectible bottling to prove it. Just don’t drink the whisky while racing a Formula One car, please. Oh, and this is one of those rare limited editions that’s easy on the wallet — a mere $75! Link is -> HERE <-.

Michter’s Sour Mash is one of my favorite American whiskeys, and probably my favorite that’s bottled at a modest 86 proof (not that you’d notice from drinking it). Every now and then they release a Toasted Barrel Finish version of Sour Mash that comes and goes pretty quickly — it’s delicious as well, though distinct from the OG version. This is the first time it’s been bottled in three years, and who knows, it may be the last time we’ll see it until 2028. It’s special because… well, just read the article! Link is -> HERE <-.

I hate September for a lot of reasons, not least because all the dipwads who flake off from NYC to the Hamptons for the summer come back. But September has, for the last 15 years or so, meant the release of the latest series of Octomore, the world’s most heavily peated whisky, from the masterminds at Bruichladdich. The peatiness is the selling point, but the complex, multilayered flavor is the reason to drink it more than once. Every series sees a few new wrinkles that distinguish it from previous years, and this is no exception. Find out what the latest bells and whistles are in my writeup — link is -> HERE <-.

And to mix things up a little, here’s a writeup of the newest Maestra Selection release from Mijenta — one of the go-to tequilas in the Sachs home. I must confess that my wife is more of a tequila enthusiast than I, and I’m trying to get her to partner on some writeups with me, so watch this space! But while she may drink more tequila than I, we both love Mijenta. And this release is very interesting because it’s a blend of agave from all five Mexican states where tequila can legally be made. Betcha can’t name the four besides Jalisco! Well I did, and you can find out which states they are — and find out more about this noteworthy expression — in my article. Link is -> HERE <- .
